The Danish Institute for Human Rights is Denmark’s independent national human rights institution. We are one of the longest running human rights institutions in the world, working on the basis of research and evidence from Denmark and abroad. Our staff and partners have in-depth knowledge about the political system and the human rights situation where we work, and we cooperate with ministries, justice systems, police forces, civil society organisations, companies, universities etc.. Our aim is to support the development of stronger and more coherent human rights systems, where every actor fulfils their mandate and contributes to the protection and promotion of human rights.

YOUR ROLE
As Department Director for Neighbouring Countries, you will manage a group of 12 highly skilled professionals in Copenhagen. In addition, you will have the overall responsibility for the Institute’s presence in Tunisia, Morocco, and Jordan.

The department director is part of the international management team with direct reference to the International Director. We are looking for a colleague with strategic insight into human rights challenges, operational management experience of concrete programmes and project activities, and a keen interest in people. We expect you to lead on the implementation of the Institute’s strategy in the Middle East, Europe, and Asia. The department has a strong focus on working with state actors (national human rights institutions and government focal points). It is also home for two cross cutting themes, namely Access to Justice and Human Rights Governance.

You will also be responsible for the total portfolio of projects in the department, including workplans, budgets, results, and fundraising, as well as for staff well-being and development.

YOUR QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERTISE, AND EXPERIENCE
We are looking for applicants who have experience with creating a supportive and collaborative work cultures, including across cultures. We encourage applications from individuals who appreciates the expertise of others, and who can contribute on their own.

In addition, we are looking for:

  • Master’s degree in international law or similar
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in the field of human rights, good governance, rule of law, and development cooperation
  • Knowledge and experience of the international human rights systems
  • Strong conceptual grasp and analytical skills – and the ability to translate policies, norms, and standards into practice
  • Team players with experience in managing people
  • Ability to build trust and adapt to difference country situations and stakeholders
  • Documented experience in fundraising and administration of larger donor funds (including EU)
  • Fluency in French and English. Arabic is an advantage.
SALARY AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
The positions of Department Directors are highly demanding with duty station in Copenhagen and with expected international travel. Salary is at “chief advisor” level with the possibility to negotiate individual supplements in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement.
